PLA vs PETG
Share
What filament should I use for my print? Here's how to pick the right one.
The short answer
PLA for looks, PETG for use. If it's something that doesn't need to be very strong, go PLA. If it does, go PETG.
PLA
PLA gives the sharpest detail and it's the cheaper option. It comes in the most colours too. It's perfect for models, figures, tabletop pieces and gifts. The catch is that it doesn't like high heat. It also snaps if you push it too hard.
PETG
PETG is the tough one. It flexes a little instead of snapping, handles heat better, and doesn't mind rain or sun. That makes it ideal for heavy duty items and outdoor items. The finish is a touch less crisp than PLA, and it costs slightly more.
Our two-tone pen case is PETG on the outside so it survives a bag, and PLA on the inside for clean detail. If your project has separate parts, you can pick a different material for each one.
One thing to know
Neither is safe for anything that touches food, and neither should be used for load-bearing or safety-critical parts.
