Subaru Impreza STI Kit Card
Share
Kit cards are one of my favourite things to print. The whole model comes off the printer as a flat card of parts on a frame, just like an old-school model kit. You snap the pieces out and click them together. This one is a Subaru Impreza STI, and it came out even better than we thought.
Colour straight off the printer
The blue body, black windows and grille, white headlights and yellow wheels were all printed in their own colours in one go, with the printer switching filament as it goes. It's the best way to get sharp, clean colour on small details like the lights and the bonnet vents, which would be a nightmare to paint by hand.
What we learned
I printed it at 0.16mm layer height, a nice balance of detail and speed. Flat and upright surfaces came out crisp. On the curved bonnet and roof, though, you can see the layer lines in light. Curves are where layer height shows most. Next time we'd go down to 0.12mm, or give those panels a light sanding.
Colour changes also add print time, and a bit of extra plastic gets used each time the printer swaps filament. That's worth knowing if you're pricing up a multi-colour print.
